Arnis Basic Strikes

It might be challenging to learn how to do different Arnis, Escrima, or Kali strikes without knowing the standard target regions. But it can be far more difficult to swing a stick if you don't know how to strike with proper form. To avoid injuries and hit targets better, you may want to introduce yourself to the basic strikes that most kali disciplines make use of. They are as follows:

1. The Ekis or the X strikes involves two downward diagonal strikes from the left and right side of the body. It draws the letter X when done correctly and is intended to hit the temples or sides of the head.

2. The Banda y Banda or striking from right to left or left to right. The motion of the stick has to be horizontal and can help in hitting the sides of the face or the elbows or triceps.

3. Ocho means the number 8 and it uses two upward diagonal strikes. Doing this is like drawing a number 8 on its side or an infinite symbol. It is for striking the chin or the knees.

4. The Doblete is like the ekis but involves forearm power with circular hand and wrist motions as follow up to make two hits in one downward diagonal strike.

5. The Pilantik which is very much a double Abaniko or fan strike is used for hitting the temples or eyes. With this, though, the strikes use a lot of forearm and wrist motion to execute with power.

When done correctly, these could prove to deal devastating damage. But, of course, before you commit to hitting someone or something, know that you must also be ready to face the outcome of your actions. So, for every strike, you must think of your intention too.
